The invitation

The invitation is in his left hand. And in his right his phone for checking the address.  The doorbell rings.  And rings again unanswered.  He waits with his back to the door.  Checks his phone.  Rings the doorbell.  Nothing.  Shrugs, tries the door.  It opens.

Hello.

He steps into a courtyard pulling his suitcase.  It is the courtyard on an inn.  He wonders why the inn has no sign on the street.  His thought is interrupted by a crackling of a tannoy followed by an announcement.

THE INNKEEPER AND THE THIEF SHALL COMMENCE IN FIVE MINUTES.

He looked about him.  There were no signs of life other than a lovely coat on the back of a chair next to the inn door.
